about

In 1975, I bought a Giannini Craviola 12-string guitar using my high school graduation money. For the next 15 years, it was my main guitar and I played it endlessly (ask anyone who knew me in college!). I wrote numerous songs on it, including "Morning Stretch" and "Zosia". It was retired from use in 1989 with severe injuries such as a broken internal brace, cracked bridge, a warped face, worn and buzzing frets, and holes dug into the fingerboard (literally). In December 2008, I showed it to my luthier, Ken Lofquist, who felt he could bring it back to life. Two weeks later he dropped it off - his skills are wicked - the guitar is amazing!

Later that evening, I picked her up and turned on the Tascam DR1 recorder. I played non-stop, unrehearsed, and unrelentless for 36 minutes and 32 seconds. With the exception of "Morning Stretch", everything was "written" as it was "played". After some minimal editing, I realized that I had a collection of songs that were cohesive, unique and represented the fabulous capabilities of this beautiful guitar.

I named it "Maiden Voyage Pt. 2" because it was like playing it for the first time all over again. The guitar still felt like an old friend and it responding remarkably well, staying in tune through a fairly aggressive half hour. Stylistically, the music is all instrumental, no overdubs (just one guitar playing) and is similar to early Leo Kottke, acoustic Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), or John Butler. Special thanks to Dirk Reinking for mastering!

The entire running time is less that 25 minutes and it is a nice background listen for just about anything. I hope you have the opportunity to listen to it in it's entirety, realizing that it was completely spontaneous and probably will never be duplicated. Enjoy.
